The first ever Grand Pier Half Marathon took place on Sunday 23rd September 2012 in association with Freak Events Ltd.

Although the conditions were very wet for spectators and volunteers the conditions for running were pretty good! A fantastic time was posted by Stuart Leaney to win the first ever Grand Pier Half Marathon in 1:11:42 with local girl Liz Wiggins winning the female race in 1:28:55.

In 2013 the conditions for competitors were a lot warmer, so the volunteers were happier but the competitors not so. Stuart Leaney from Chippenham was on show to defend his 2012 title but had stiff competition from local runners James Rodgers (Clevedon AC) and Chris Old (Weston AC).

The race started shortly after 9am with superb conditions, if a little warm. All the runners began at a tremendous pace but by the end of the first lap the top 3 runners were shoulder to shoulder and all looked very comfortable. By the time the leaders had come past the Grand Pier with a mile and a half to go James Rodgers had a sizeable lead and pushing on.

James continued with his form and came in as eventual winner in a time of 1.13.37, second was Stuart Leaney 1.14.25 and third Chris Old 1.14.33.

The femal race was a much more one sided affair with Annabel Granger leading from the gun and continued throughout the race in a fantastic time of 1.21.27. Second place was Sally Johnson in a time of 1.27.37 and looked very comfortable throughout and third was Nikki Linfield 1.29.59 – well done ladies.

The 2013 run will start on the Grand Pier on Sunday 2nd November 2014 where you will begin your 13.1 miles of “fun” and “exhaustion” by doing two laps of the flat (ish)all road/ tarmac route – it has been quoted as being a very good course for a PB and certainly a number of runners did that on Sunday 29th September!

With the generous support of the many sponsors we have a considerable cash prize fund available and further money to support charities.

Numbers are limited for this event and after the success of the 2012 and 2013 it is sure to fill up quickly so do not delay and get a “Freakin move on”!

“Great race, very well done to all involved! Marshalls were incredible and so was the support considering the weather. Very happy as I got a new PB and I love the bright top (much more use to me than a t shirt!) Will be wearing it on night runs!”

“Thank you for a very well organised half at Weston it was lovely to see such a range of runners and walkers/walk runners and so many amazing stewards out. I never usually run out and back the same way usually a circle but it made a change and was good to be able to cheer on other runners on the way bye.”

“I took 9 minutes off my PB but the wife took 19 minutes off hers.”

“I took part in the half marathon today and just wanted to say that it was a really enjoyable experience, thank you very much for organising it. It was very well organised and I found all of the volunteers helping with water stations, marshalling, registration, bag storage etc to be very helpful, cheerful and encouraging. It was a great atmosphere and I’d recommend it to anyone.”

These are just a small selection of the very positive quotes received from the competitors, and certainly what drives us on in ensuring we put on great events for you all!
